102-VM is finally alive

$

I'll post a brief video later. Now I just need to find a toolpost/tooling and I'm in business. I spent a little time learning about the lathe but I'm confused by one thing. Does the VM not have power feeds? I can get it to feed when it's in screw cutting mode but not otherwise. Is there a setting I'm missing or does it just not have power feed in the non-screw cutting mode?

Thanks
Andy

How does one post videos here? Or do I have to upload them to something like youtube and link to it?

I don't know anything about the seller, just thought I would pass this along. It's a turret lathe, and seems to come with lots of extras/tooling. Also, what is the contraption above the head stock???

The pictures make me want to buy this thing, but that would put me in the doghouse. And I don't even have a dog or doghouse!

The forward -reverse feed rod shift lever will not engage(either forward of reverse) so there is no power to the carriage. anyone ever have this problem? It looks like there is plate on the face of the gear box through which the feed screw, feed rod and on-off lever control goes that can be taken off and you can then get to the shift lever mechanism. anyone ever have this problem, if so how did you fix it? any help/suggestions are appreciated!! Thanks!! tom

have a bad ball nut and ball screw on our mori seiki SL25,

and i got all the covers off and i can see where the motor and the upper thrust bearings and where the Ball nut would un-bolt from the cross slide.

but i can figure out how to get to the thrust bearing block at the bottom with the 3 angular contact bearings and the nut at the end of the ball screw.

there is a large block that is inbetween the ways that looks like it could be removed to access it. but cant seem to figure out how to remove it.

here are some pictures

Restoring appearance of Multifix tool post ?

I have the same Multifix as in below ad from Romi M17 lathe (see pix and video link). Mine has no paint left on it and wondering what they used on the one below....was it silver hammertone paint....or ?

FWIW, I do have new Multifix nameplate (stamped with appropriate model number) I got from a Schaublin dealer years ago...yet to use it. But back to the paint seems like rattlecan hammertone might not last long on a toolpost.

Thoughts ?

Hi

I have an old and nice, but well used LZ 330. It is quite prescice and functional , but there are a few things I am not sure about.
I am new to the forums. I have some other old machinery (Nikolas Correa Mill/Kondia Powermill, Arboga drillpress) in my workshop so I guess taking part of the community in here to share knowledge makes great sense:-)

I have 3 questions for the knowledgeable people out there:

1. The spindle speed selector knob and lever on the lever left is not fully engaging the proper gears... I dont like the idea of taking it apart and check. However if I play around with it I most of the times manage to get a descent spindle speed for the work at hand.
Tips?

2. On the bed there is an adjustable stop for the longitudal movement. It also appears to me that there is a button/swith on the carriage that looks like it could be a feed stop button coming into action when it hits the adjustable stop on the bed...

It seems stuck and I cant find a way to make it operational. Does anyone know if there was ever such a auto feed stop function on these machines?
And is this stop just for

3.
Lastly, does anyone do lots of threadcutting on these machines? There is no dial. I guess whn cutting I need to keep it enganged and run it forward and backward without dissengage/loose thread pattern?? This way is a little awkard when cutting thread up to a flange for example as the machine takes a while to come to a stop... So the feed continues with the intertia of the machine so to speak. It would be nice to be able to disengage, go back and start on the next cut..? I have not donw much thread cutting so bear with me if there is something I did not understand here:-)

Graziano SAG 12 shuts off @2K rpm the heat fix

My Sag 12 keeps shutting down @2K rpm. I am running my SAG 12 from a balanced rotary converter from single phase 220V I noticed that when the temperature in my unheated shop is >65*F that the shut down does not occur. Today it's 66*F when it would normally be about freezing with snow on the ground here in the southern California mountains @6K ft elevation this time of year but the climate has changed in recent years. I usually just reset the motor contractor when the lathe shuts down, however if it is colder than 65*F the shutdown will occur again. I tried heating the motor contactor with a heat gun and no shut down.

Taking twist out of SAG12 lathe bed

I spend half the day getting the twist out of my lathe bed so there is no taper on turned parts unless taper is wanted. Thought that the 12" thick pad of reinforced high strength concrete would have been stable enough. I though wrong. Graziano SAG12 manual recommended 18" thick pad under the lathe. Perhaps after a couple of years one should expect some settling and also had a small earthquake today. First thing to getting the twist out of the bed was to level the lathe using a Hilger &Watts precision level with 0.00025IN in 10IN per DIV. Leveling does not guarantee the bed twist is gone but is rather just a starting point. Next I mounted a 2.75" 1/4" wall aluminum tube in a 3-jaw chuck and turned the tube with 3/8" wide lands 7" apart. I used a successive approximation algorithm to turn the lands, measure the diameter difference with a 2-3" micrometer, adjust one of the four level screws that support the lathe, and re-measure and repeat the procedure until the difference was as small as I was willing to deal with which was about 0.0001". Turns out repeatable measuring "tenths" using a micrometer took some time for me to develop and a tenth of a mil was pretty difficult to master. This lathe is very beefy weighing 2200 lbs and today have had a real experience in the lack stiffness in what appears to be absolutely rigid material (cast iron).

Turning 2.75" diameter x 10" long test gage. Note: carriage way guards were removed for using a level on the ways.

Cazeneuve HB575 Lathe, Oiling

Hi all..

Working on getting my older HB575 running and I have a couple of questions. First, the gearbox/headstock call for DTE light. Upon inspection at the dipstick, it is well over half full, however during loading it lost a little fluid and I would at least like to top off as a starting point. I have DTE light #24, however it is almost clear in appearance. The oil coming on the dipstick is significantly more yellow in appearance. Certainly, with time and use any oil will contaminate some, however I would like to be as thorough as possible. I have little doubt that the two are fine to use together, but does anyone know if this is how the older DTE light came normally, or should I invest the time in draining and flushing?

Second, the apron oiling setup is difficult to determine. The bottom control box is simple, but the way oiling is what is throwing me for a loop. Does anyone know the fill and checking points? Recommended lubricant?

Thanks very much for any help!

I repowered my Sag 14 with a 3hp single phase motor. The original 4kw 575 3 phase motor is sitting on the garage floor and will probably never be used again.

Any idea of what this flanged mount motor might be worth?

Model engine modification using a lathe mandrel

$

I volunteered to modify an air cooled model 4 stroke engine to water cooling for a friend, several years ago. Originally, I was going to mount it on a VMC and interpolate around the cooling fins so that I had a round surface to shrink fit a water cooling ring to. Somebody suggested using a mandrel and turning it on a lathe, so here is the setup:

I've extended a Seco parting tool out to clear the front of the casting and was able to plunge cut the fins away at 400rpm. A sideways finishing cut brought all of the fins to the same diameter. The tool was ok cutting sideways if no more than 0.005" DOC was used. Any more and it notably deflected.

The mandrel is a short length of Superior ground shafting. Oddly enough, this completely metric engine has a 1.000" cylinder liner bore. The 10-24 brass bushed cap screw provides positive driving torque to the casting. The final step will be to shrink fit a 1.5mm thick brass ring around this newly machined surface to provide a cooling passage for the engine block.

After all, how many of us on this "manual machine" forum have lathes sitting at home just waiting to be used for some interesting project!

Weiler LZ330 Condor VS2 leadscrew dog clutch details

$

Ran into a problem repairing a Weiler LZ330 Condor VS2 lathe. It seems like there are some missing parts that would attach the leadscrew to the dog clutch, and without them, the leadscrew does not rotate.

Would anyone out there have a similar model lathe and/or a few photos of what is holding these two together?
I have the factory manual, but the details on this part are not good enough for me to determine what I need.
