Musings on tool holders

$

My new machine has Multifix size A and my old one size Aa the difference is massive, it is strange to me there is no intermediate Multifix size. As the attached picture shows Tripan 111 does kind of fit that in between size.

Seems like the Aa is a bit light for the schaublin 102 but size A is too large. I wonder how of the difference in performance is due to the toolholders?

Leinen MLZ limit clutch?

$

Does anyone understand how the clutch on the limit stops works? I have gone and messed up something so it now won't turn when the lead screw is engaged. I have only rotated the 8mm square to the left of the cross-slide but now it doesn't matter which position it is in the slightest pressure disengages or stalls the drive.

I can't find a detailed manual for this machine. I have one for the normal MLZ 4 S but it doesn't cover this anyway and mine is a 4 STG which is different in some ways although I think this system is the same.

Hi All,I am trying to get the chuck off my LZ330, I have loosened the safety collar but it will not budge!, do you think spraying WD40 on it and leaving it over night would be beneficial. All thoughts and ideas welcome.

Schaublin 135, too much play on power lever

Hello,

Just received my Schaublin 135. It is one of the first models, year of manufacturing is 1966. So it needs some TLC and some help would be much appreciated. The first problem is the major play on the power lever. Especially when I put it down it will not engage in the high spindle speed. You can also feel and see the play on the power lever. So I like to take it apart and fix the problem. Can somebody please advise what the best sequence is? Some technical documentation would be much appreciated. Thanks for the support.

What tool holder goes with this type of HSS blank

I have a good collection of HSS in a nominal 12mm wide section but no tool holder and haven't figured out exactly what it looks like.

Any suggestions? Guessing Swiss or German as it came with my Leinen lathe from Germany.
Thanks

ID:	176301I'm new to the site. Let me know if I need to move this post. Just begun the restoration of a model 8301, 15-50 Colchester lathe built in 1974. The tail stock quill is sticky and won't fully retract into TS. I'm trying to disassemble the quill lock so I can pull the quill. There is a 'floating' locking key and eccentric lock shaft to lock quill. See parts diagram. The key appears to be trapped and I can't get the shaft out of the TS housing. The lock shaft rotation is so stiff I have to use a dead blow to move it! I have the lock handle at ~45 degrees from vertical to release the key and with the TS on its back should release key. No go. Tapping hard on the opposite side from the handle. No real movement. Put a thin drift in the quill slot and tapped. Key feels trapped hard!
Thoughts? Thanks in advance
Jon

Weiler Matador different versions?

Hi
I'm looking to buy a Weiler Matador.
I have seen one that has "missing levers".
The pictures below shows what I mean (the pictures are loans from the web not the actual machine I'm looking at).
as you can see there are two levers missing to the left in one version compared to the other one.
Can anyone clarify what are the difference between these two versions?

Leinen B25 collets

$

I thought that Boley and Leinen collets were no longer available but it looks like there are a number of sellers such as 363E (B25) Spannzange Zugspannzange - ab Lager lieferbar They are called DIN 6341 type 363e and aren't all that expensive although I also don't think they are as good as Schaublin collets etc. It is funny how close these things are to W25, same end diameter, same body diameter, 16 vs 15 degree angle, they are a bit longer however and the thread is totally different. I have a nearly full set of collets but it is good to know I can get some extras. I suppose it would be simple enough to grind a Lienen spindle to accept W25 as it is just 1 degree different but it is probably not worth the risk and those schaublin collets are not cheap. I also have my 102 sitting next to the Leinen so I can always use that for the lighter more accurate work with nice collets.

This has me thinking that there must be more information on these lathes than I am finding, is there a German language discussion forum that covers Leinen etc machines? I have found one but it seems to be broken as I can't sign up and get security warnings. The fact that we have very few German speaking people active here makes me think there must be alternatives while there are not for less common languages such as Norwegian and Dutch whose speakers we do find here.

Speaking of collets has anyone used ER collets on a lathe for work holding and compared it to "real collets" such as W20, 5C etc? There are plenty of chucks available or could be made without too much trouble and it would be simple enough to mount one but I am not sure how well they actually function for work-holding, the wide size range would be nice however. I have checked a couple of my B25's and was not impressed with the run-out which is why I have been thinking of alternatives.

Leinen threading indicator gears

$

Hi folks, not my machine but I am trying to help another Lienen owner. He asked if I had an indicator on my machine which I don't but figured I would put it out there and see if anyone else knows.

The deal is he has a threading indicator and an inch thread lealdscrew MLZ but is missing the gears that connect the indicator to the screw. The small gear appears to be metric module 1 with 16 teeth. The leadscrew seems to be imperial 8 threads per inch, so the larger gear it engages with might be a Diametral Pitch rather than Module size.

It is a long shot but does anyone know what those gears are supposed to be. In a quick image search it seems like threading indicators are not common on these machines. Mine doesn't have nor does Sbs' (the only other active Leinen MLZ owner on the forum I know of). I have never seen detailed documentation for Leinens like I have for my Schaublin 13 mill with drawings of everything including accessories etc. although that would be perfect for this situation.

thanks
Luke

Mori Seiki ZL15 HELP!!!!!!!

$

I am the proud owner of a Mori Seiki ZL-15 twin turret with tailstock lathe with a Fanuc 11 TT controller. Bought the machine and it was DROPPED in shipping. To make a long story short we finally got the hardware running.......and are profiling barrels but found out that the batteries had died at some point and lost the parameters and compensation tables. Someone appears to have loaded something generic from an 11 series Fanuc controller but we didn't realize none of the twin turret options were missing until too late.

After MULTIPLE service calls form Fanuc $$$$$ and having a friend who does laser alignment rebuild the compensation tables (More$$$$)we went from .020 misalignment on the Z axis to less than .0006 over the full range of z travel and the ability to pinch turn. Called fanuc to get the parameter list the machine shipped with ........and as it is serial number 2.....yes TWO, LOL.....all the documentation for the machine was lost in a fire several years back.

We pretty much have everything squared away to profile 16 inch barrels (DI45ACP AR15 conversion kits for you gun nuts).....but I am trying to access G52 and G53and G54 through 59 to simplify machining shorter barrels of various lengths. I have spent WAY more than I paid for the machine getting it running. Was hoping someone has a similar machine that could help me out with settings.....I think 9126.3 is the parameter for G52, G53, just not sure how to set it.

I hate to scrap it or part it out as it runs smooth as silk, holds tolerance beautifully and is allowing us to profile a barrel in a single setup in near record time. If anyone has any suggestions or a similar machine it would be greatly appreciated if you could contact me.

Thanks for reading

Graziano SAG14 Headstock Noise

$

I have a question for other SAG14 owners concerning the sounds from the headstock. I'm not sure if it's my imagination or not, but the headstock gears sure seem noisy to me. When I start the lathe up cold, the gears seem pretty quiet, but after the oil gets up to full temperature, it gets pretty noisy. The only description I can give is that the gears have a loud rattling type noise, especially under light loading. I can put a little load on the gears just by pressing my hand pretty heavily on the chuck while it's turning and the rattling noise decreases somewhat. I run Mobil DTE26 (ISO 68) oil and the inside of the headstock looks immaculate and I can't find anything physically wrong. I have thought about going to a heavier oil, but not sure if that is a good idea. How do your SAG14's sound ? Any ideas about mine would be welcomed.

Thanks in advance

Ted

VDF V3 Heidenreich & Harbeck Lathe Clutch and (Maybe) Oil Problem.

$

Hi together,

i have a "little" problem with my good old Heidenreich & Harbeck V3.

Yesterday i was turning some small parts with high speed (1400 RPM). After 1 hour of turning i heard a very heavy load on the engine, smoke comes out of the main gearbox. I shut off the machine as fast as a could an opened the gearbox cover.

The spindle was hard to turn by hand and I got scared that I ruined my main bearings. I made those new a couple of years ago when I purchased the Machine.

But after I took of the Gearbox Cover I could see smoke coming from the Clutch, exactly said from the right Clutch of the 2 which is used for reverse spindle direction.
The bearings from the main Spindle had normal Temperature, everything seems okay, at that moment I felt happy again because the front bearing costs around 2000 Bucks… :D

I was wondering because I turned in forward direction, not reverse.

After I let all that stuff cool down for 2 hours everything turned and felt normal :O

I have to say that the clutch for the reverse direction always has been pretty worn out and I think that it needs some care.

My 2 cents on this smoke are:

The reverse clutch basket (Here in Germany I would say “Kupplungskorb”) is spinning free on the Shaft when turning with forward rotation. There has to be a Inside Bearing that allows the sliding.
That bearing maybe got some Temperature and started to block on the Shaft which causes smoke and not so nice noises.

Will have to take that stuff apart, but I have no good access to that side of the Machine.

I got scared that my Oil Pipes and stuff like that in the machine are not correct so I would really be happy if someone here knows something about the VDF´s lathe and maybe there are pictures of main gearboxes from your lathes?

I think I will be able to post more pics in the evening.

I also hope my English is understandable an I wish all of you the best regards from Germany,

Christian

Schaublin 70 headstock - can it be tightened?

$

Hello. New to the forum with a few questions. I have one year of watchmaking school behind me where we used Schaublin 70s extensively, but never did maintenance on them...

I purchased one with a lot of accessories for what seemed to be a reasonable price. Now that I have it home and hooked up, I am noticing some defects as follows:

1) The bearing at the front seems to be a little loose (rotational play, perhaps 0.3 mm). I cannot figure out how this can be tightened and cannot seem to locate instructions online. Any tips here? I am currently lubricating it with synthetic motor oil. This is what the former owner recommended. Is there anything better that I should be using?
2) Can anyone look at the pictures and give me a guess on the age? Based on the limited information online I'm guessing between 1946 and the early 1960s, but honestly I don't have a clue.

It's a great lathe, but not in as tip-top shape as I had understood/hoped. I am very much looking forward to having this in tip top shape again so that it can help me make some great parts. Thanks for any and all feedback.

Clausing Colchester 15"x50" Triumph 2000 lathe, new to me

$
0

Hi all, just picked up a Clausing Colchester lathe last weekend. Couldn't beat the price (free!). Not under power, but appears to be in decent shape. Cleaned it up the other night (WD-40 and scotch-brite) to remove oil/grime/very light surface rust. I've loosely/quickly inspected it, turned the spindle by hand, Z-axis by handwheel and X-axis handwheel (missing key on shaft though, but it did move a small distance).

Only thing that appears to be a problem at the moment is compound seems seized... Haven't looked to see whether it has it's own gib yet, aside form the set screw on the left (which is lose). Appears to have been in the process of being setup to be an automated polishing machine: limit switches on Z and X axis, and they removed ability to move any levers (removed all keys). So I'll have to replace those, no big deal. It's missing the 4 studs/nuts that hold down the compound, but other than that and the keys, seems complete. Are there any specific or problematic areas I should look (short of doing a complete overhaul) on this machine? Outside of the usual checking for oil in headstock and apron? Ways seem decent enough, I haven't put an indicator to it, but up by the headstock there might be a couple thou or so of wear... just enough to pick up with your fingernail. Not much room in my garage to work around it, but just enough to be able to use it if I don't have to run away from chips ;)

Not too bad for the price, about $550 into it so far between trailer rental and fuel... and a 10" chuck I just picked up for it. Now to find or have a local sheet metal shop make me a chip tray and it'll be golden.
