Schaublin 160 in New York looking for a new owner

In trying to locate documentation for my older 160 I was following up a lead and found a 160 in New York (Long Island). This machine is in storage and has been for some years. I have no pictures or hard info on it so far. The info I have is conflicting. It may be the older model and it may have drive issues (pretty simple set-up though on these), or both statements are incorrect. One would really have to go look at it. Seller is looking for an offer, but realistically he probably should not expect very much.
I have no financial stakes in this, except that my commission is a copy of the documentation.:D

If seriously interested and willing to keep me in mind for the documentation, please p-mail me.

Any new owner will become a member of a secretive society, get a plaque, and a free tour at the Bevilard factory, where Schaublin will deny any knowledge of ever having made that machine.

star wheel tailstock, has anyone made one?

the star wheel tailstock on Schaublin lathes is THE hot setup if you listen to anyone who has one, it seems they should be more common, no?

given that they are not frekin' rocket science, why are they so rare? also, why not make one for otherwise decent and capable lathes? seems not so hard, anyone done that? take a good DP quill..

You'll discover in that thread.

It's in french, but the pictures will speak for themselves, and the author speaks a perfectly fluent english, should you want to contact him (not to mention he's a PM member even if more of a lurker so far ! ;).

I thought it may be interesting for 102N-VM owners and if you make sure to browse past the first pages of cleaning/assessing, you'll be impressed with the level of care and detail put in the restoration.

Mori Seiki MS-850 versus Victor 1630 versus Bridgeport Romi versus ...

I'm looking for a smallish footprint and reliable, stout lathe to put in my garage.
Not looking to start a lathe flame/religion war :-)

Footprint max size I want is about 3'x8' with a little wiggle room. I have 230V single phase power, but will be getting a rotary phase converter.

Recommendations for stout lathes with 3 jaw, 4 jaw, 5C, DRO and/or TravADials, ..., 230V, that fit in my footprint range? I have some listed below that I looked at today, but not sure how good those prices are.

I went to a local machinery dealer and looked at some machines, some of which are quite stout and a bit bigger than ideal, but could work.

He has a Mori Seiki MS-850 in what seems decent condition. Spindle and gearbox sound good. I haven't put an indicator on the spindle yet, but I will on my next trip. It is wired for 460V, which isn't ideal, as I would prefer to avoid having to use a transformer if I can. Are they dual voltage capable? It has a 3 jaw, 4 jaw, faceplates, 5C collet closer, nice Heidenhain 2 axis 0.0002" DRO
He said it came out of a shop where they were machining graphite, so I'm wondering how that might [adversely] affect the machine, spindle, ways, electrics, ...
He's asking $6900 for it, which is more than I want to spend, but ...
Of all the machines I ran today, it had the best feel for shifting gears and in using it.

I also ran a Victor 1630, with a 5C collet closer, 3 jaw, 4 jaw, broken DRO. The spindle and gearbox sounded good on this as well. Gear shifting was pretty straightforward as well. He's asking $4000. How's that price?

He also has a Bridgeport Romi with a 3 jaw, 4 jaw and taper attachment. It was definitely less stout than the Mori and a bit deeper with the deep chip pan, but clean, good looking condition. It was probably mostly my lack of familiarity, but the gear shifting seemed awfully complicated to me...
It didn't have a 5C collet closer on it, which is a strike against it.
He's asking $4000 for it, but I don't like the idea of having to spring for a 5C collet closer.

I also ran a Harrison M350, which ran well, but has a mysterious shifting dial pair, which I couldn't figure out how to interpret what gear I was in.

There is a Lodge & Shipley that I didn't get a chance to run. Looked in decent shape, but I have no experience with them.

I've a Schaublin 70 I think I'd like to sell. Its in good shape, comes with 35 collets, 3 jaw, OEM overhead drive and collet closer. Lever action tailstock. Located in Toronto. I'd like to avoid shipping and ideally sell it to someone who can come and see it, although I could meet this side of Buffalo. If you're interested and want to come by for a look, please contact me at michael0100 at hotmail dot com and provide a phone number.

Thanks

Schaublin headstocks- plain or roller?

A recent ad got me to thinking. I've had a prejudice for years against plain bearings in lathes due to speed limitations in moderate to bigger sized lathes and fact that I don't have the skill to rescrape headstock bearings. Some have said for Schaublin lathes (ie 70 and 102) sized machines they prefer plain bearings. Opinions? Experience? Thanks.

Celtic (Mondiale) 14 lathe controls

$

Hi everyone,

I just picked up a good condition Celtic 14 lathe, made in Belgium by Mondiale. It's the older of the two styles I've seen, but haven't found a serial number yet to date it. I got hold of a user manual in French, and am planning to translate it to figure out lubrication etc. In the meantime, though, I'm hoping someone here has used one of these lathes and can advise on the dials and controls on the headstock. It's a bit more complicated than my Lodge and Shipley....

There are 2 dials on the headstock itself, marked A-B and C-D

There are 3 dials below the headstock, marked as follows:
E-F-G-H
1 through 9
J-J-K-K

There's a 4 position dial below that, on the plinth casting

I think that A-B and the 4 position dial control the spindle speed, BUT/ the forward / reverse lever on the apron also has 5 positions: fast for / slow for / off / slow rev / fast rev. Huh?

The threading/feeds chart also has some weird headings, like "BD". What does that mean? B and D are on different dials... Also, there are Roman numerals in some of the row headers, but I see no Roman numerals anywhere else on the machine. Help!

Thanks in advance for ANY info on how to use this lathe!

Best regards,

Lee

any information would be appreciated.

Mondiale lathe levelling screws

Hi all,

I've cleaned up and oiled the Celtic (Mondiale) 14" lathe, and put power to it. Made a few test cuts, and it runs very nicely. I'd like to level it next, and I'm wondering if the 4 screws around the base of the lathe are designed as levelling screws, or of they were intended to be used for boltong the lathe down?

I don't plan to bolt the lathe down, but I would like to level it as best I can. If I were to use those 4 screws, would I be likely to crack either my concrete or the cast iron base of the lathe? I'm just wondering if it's too much of a point load for around 1800lb of lathe....

Thanks for any advice you can offer,

Lee

Need help with installing Forkardt chuck onto Schaublin 135

Hello,

I'm a fresh new owner of 1967 Schaublin 135.
When bought F160/D4 Forkardt chuck was included.
As stated I have troubles with installing it. I have never used D4 camlock chuck before. I don't think there should be some extra science behind properly installing it but I just cant manage it to tight it evenly, therefore to sit fully onto the spindle flange. Pins doesn't look damaged at all, I have also tried to screw/unscrew them, trying to catch that optimum depth so the counter pin can smoothly grab the radius but no success. I managed to safely secure only 2 of them but not all three...
Does anyone have some fresh advice about that?

Here are also some pictures of the chuck...

Latheasaurus Rex our first lathe a Voest DATR 1.5

$

We finally landed our first lathe, an old Voest DATR 1.5, for us a monster as we had been looking at old SB etc which were half the size, but it crossed my path yesterday, the price was right and I happened to have my flat deck trailer on the job site so I left work early and picked it up, brought it home for my son and he is thrilled. He has been wanting one for a while now to continue his pursuit of his machining interest, and I am all for it. One of the tools I have never owned.

It had been in service at the machine shop it came from for many years and when they rearranged the shop, found they didn't really need it anymore, so with a fork lift, plopped it on my trailer and away I went. Has a 3 jaw chuck on it, and a 300lb 4 jaw with lifting eye they also gave me. My son will be cleaning it for the next few days, remove all the chips, give it a good wash with Diesel and a brush to remove the grunge and provide a little lube to all the nooks and crannies that haven't seen movement in a while, then go through it and give it some proper maintenance. It currently has a 460 3ph motor on it, I will need to change that to a 208/220 3 phase, which I should have around here somewhere, then I will use the Baldor 15H series VFD I have on my log splitter to drive it, should work pretty well.

Here are a few pictures of it as she sits on the trailer. Oh, and if anyone has documentation for this in a pdf, please PM me and I'll give you my email, we received nothing with it, and it would help us figure it all out. Thanks!!

Cheers
