I don't have either piece For the LZ330, No photos in my literature either.

Working from a "photo tragic idea", I might come up with something that looks appropriate.

All references appreciated.

I did uncover a photo of a follow rest for a 280, looks like it might be a good pattern for a 330

Leinen apron rare oil leakage: any hint?

Hi,

I'm almost finished the restoration of a Boley-Leinen LZ4SB . I have a rather uncommon oil leakage and I wonder if anybody can give me a hint about it.

The following pictures illustrate the leakage:

As you can see, the oil is emptying the carter by the handknob and its shaft. The handknob fit is tight as new. However the suprising fact is that the oil level in the appron is far lower that the bottom of the knob shaft. Thus it seems that the oil is going out by a kind of combined capillary and siphoning phenomenon. I'm pretty sure that the lathe was not designed to have this leakage ;) .
Actually, the oil used in this housing is Fuchs RENOLIN MR20.

Does anybody have some hints about how to solve the leakage? Can it be due to the oil characteristics?

Got my SAG12 running today.

Got my SAG12 running today using a home brew rotary phase converter RPC. All the clutches work including the stop button on the end of the joystick. (a really cool feature) The SAG 12 appears to be a pretty neat lathe.

A problem is that after running at the higher speeds a contactor kicks out and I have to wait a few minutes before resetting the contactor to start the lathe again. Anyone have that problem with their SAG lathe? Don’t know if the RPC unbalanced voltages is the cause or not. In any case I ordered a 3HP VFD controller to generate voltage balanced 3phase. I was also thinking if I could run the gear box oil pump with an independent motor, then the VFD could be used to continuously slow the lathe down even slower than the slowest speed. The VFD would be the best of both worlds the continuously variable speed of a VFD and the torque of the gear box/ gear head with a 3HP motor. I think if I went the independently driven oil pump I would include a car type canister oil filter also. BTW the SAG12 screen oil filter reminds me of my first car a "63 VW bug.

Hi everybody me and my lathe are new here and new to each other as well I just got her home. I bought a 1968 homach km-1800 its a 14/23 x 48 gap bed gear head lathe.
the good part is its in great shape and i fgot it for dirt cheap the bad news is it has the gap missing and no other chucks but the three jaw appears to be a thread on type and my first question is how do I get it off. Dont really want to shift it into low and use the gears/ brake but dont really have a place to hold teh spindle and no good choices for the chuck either can i put a piece of hexagon stock in the chuck and put a wrench on it etc. etc.

A1-6 spindle question

Thanks to everyone who helped me with this as my last post, didnt have a valid subject (milacron) and got into the subject of the spindle on my homach. I did get it off last night when i got home very easy six bolts and she was free. (thought those bolts were holding my chuck together) Just wondering if I could in the future make an extension to my spindle in the 2-3" range to extend my chuck and eventually my face plate past my missing gap in my bed with out affecting accuracy too much. ( just for reference i can only cut in the .01 range right now on my companies beat up enco 13x40 although I am working with alot of restrictions not the least of wich is I'm an electrician and work does have to get done wich is to say I dont expect to be making replacement parts for the hubble in the next year or so) or do extensions like this exist it would be fun to make it though or perhaps one that would accept a D style cam lock chuck (an adapter as it were) Tried to search for this but came up with nothing on the forum search, google search did turn up a few from this site wich leads me to question how well the search works but I think I'm off subject with that.

Cazeneuve 360 HBX - What would be involved in converting to VFD ?

$

The 360 HBX I have is leaking oil from the vari drive both top and bottom, which makes it tempting to just chuck the whole drive and replace with a larger motor and VFD. As I recall, even if one could fit an appropriate HP motor in, it's not that simple due to the separate hydraulic pump that provides force for the drive disks, lubricates the drive arbors, headstock area and threading gears.

OTOH, I should think if one could conjure up a separate electric pump just for the headstock and gearing (utilizing existing oil reservoir, lines to headstock/gearing and existing drain back to reservoir , a VFD driven spindle would be possible. FWIW, that is how a Schaublin 135 lathe operates...when you turn the main "on" switch a small electric oil pump begins to recirculate oil thru the headstock and gearing, regardless of whether the spindle is turning or not. Anyone see any kinks in that idea for the Cazeneuve ?

Cazenuve 360 HBX - What is the HP or kW ?

Sales brochure says 5.2 kW but the manual says 5.2 HP ! So now I'm thinking that since 5.2 is such an odd number, maybe it's really only 4 kW. Yea or nay ?

(and before anyone says it, I can't look at the data plate on the motor because yesterday I touched it and it fell off ! And apparently went thru a worm hole into another dimension in the process as I couldn't find it to save my life ! )

I just found out today that a friend of mine and many other readers here recently passed away, John Ehler aka. TexasTurnado. I knew John for about eight years, and he was always a gentleman and a scholar with a quick sense of humor and a great dedication to learning. I briefly spoke to his wife this afternoon and will post more tomorrow after she gets back into town.

Graziano SAG12 change gear lubrication

$

The only gears on my Graziano SAG12 that aren’t sitting in an oil bath are the change gears on the banjo. Also the middle gear has an oil nipple. The Graziano SAG12 manual makes no mention of lubricating the change gears or the oil nipple on the middle gear. At present I oil these gears and the oil nipple with Vactra #2. On my Chicom 12x36 I was using a spray on graphite infused chain lube, but since to thread metric I actually had to change the change gears on the banjo the graphite infused belt chain lube was way too messy. With the SAG12 there is no immediate need to change the change gears as shifting levers makes switching from metric to inch easy and clean. I am looking for a better solution for lubricating the change gears that would be stickier than Vactra #2 way oil. Any suggestions?

Missing Back EMF Suppression Diodes on Graziano

$

I noticed that Graziano does not show back EMF suppression diodes on the 24VDC relays, contactors and electromagnetic clutches on their electrical schematic. Back EMF could be the issue with the early demise of the gear box pressure switch and the arcing noted by some of the time delay relay. I have worked with 24V DC relays before and have seen using an oscilloscope several hundred volts generated when switching even a small 24VDC relay. An easy fix for the back EMF issue is to put a diode across the 24V DC inductive relays, contactors and electromagnetic clutches. A good explanation of back EMF generated by DC switching of inductive loads can be found here: http://www.eao.com/global/en/Downloa...tive-Loads.pdf

Who's got a homemade divide drive??

Hello y'all!

I hope i put this in the right forum section??
If not please move it to the right place??

My question is: has anybody made a divide drive for the lathe they have?
Or is it even possible to make one?

I have an old Hembrug AI and want a divide drive to make small parts, only thing is these thing are off the scale in pricing
So have you made a divide drive yourself, are you willing to show me (and others) how you did that??

I was thinking of a disc mounted on the spindle, just behind the chuck, with the pin mounted on the fixed head somehow...:scratchchin:
Or use the geardrive as a scale...

Looking forward to see some beautifull homemade parts!

Thanks in advance!

threading indicator question

Hello everybody I finally have got my lathe cleaned up and running and put in place. (took longer than I wanted after figuring everything out) which is why I have been absent for awhile although not using it still so much fun in the shop getting it ready. Now that its cutting metal trying to make a captured nut and after consulting many threading books videos etc time to find out what I dont know. My question is my threading indicator does not have a mark to line up with the numbers/marks that are going around on the dial is it safe to assume that it should be at 12 o'clock. Just dont want to go through a bunch of metal and time trying to figure it out. thank you.

VDF Boehringer MAG DUE series is dead

Just last year I posted this:
http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb.../metav-242540/
and now this lathe is history.
Since I could not find any info anymore anywhere (I was looking for reason .....:D), I just mailed the guy I met at their MATAV booth last year and he just confirmed that production has seized.
He said that their suppliers had hiked prices so much that the sale price was approching the DUS series (CNC) and it therefore was no longer a feasible venture.

The DUE sales brochure is still hidden on the net:
http://www.axon-mcs.de/fileadmin/res...ger_DUE_EN.pdf

I am not aware of any other german manufactuers of something comparable remaining. Weiler is smaller.
This is sad. There are a lot of DUE still out there ("a lot" being relative). I would think a good one will keep its value nicely, but many are not good already.
I hear that Colchester/Harrison is doing nicely in Germany.

Really nice looking toolroom lathe.

Graziano SAG12 comes back to me...questions on belts, seals, etc...

$

Years ago, I came across a SAG12, saw it running under power... paid 600 dollars for it (didn't really have the money at the time...but couldnt pass it up....called a buddy with truck and trailer, got it loaded....got to taking and my buddy really wanted the lathe ...offered an even grand for it before I could come up with a number....400 dollar profit in under 2 hours ....he rewired the nasty rotting wires and yanked the motor and gearbox in hopes of rewinding or replacing motor to single phase...(had a brand new Siemens in it)

Long story short, he never got around to it....he moved and needed a place for it....so down to my shop it went (all 3 pieces)....been super swamped the last few months and finally found some time to take a look at it, we've ran new wires to the clutches....added 11.03 pounds of oil to gearbox.....came back an hour later to bolt motor to gearbox and the seal that the shaft couples to motor is leaking....

So my questions.....

Anyone know an up to date seals and bearings numbers for this and availability? May as well refresh them all while I am there

While I am there, got to thinking....are clutches still available? Any idea what the gap should be so I can check them with feeler gauges?

Since I have to reinstall motor and gearbox, May as well replace belts....anyone have the belt numbers handy?

Thanks in advance....standby for pics

Mazak Junior also Hembrug A1

Hi guys,
Well, I bought an FP1 about 6 weeks ago when I was not ready for it, my workshop is still a shambles but taking shape slowly. I now have 3phase power to the Deckel. I was actually hoping to get a nice lathe first then a milling machine but the FP1 was so nice I felt I couldn't pass.
I missed out on a PBR Didactic 500mm BC that the seller of the Deckel saw and said was in really good nick. Very few good lathes have come up for sale here in South Africa in the past year. There is a long bed Hembrug A1 going in Durban that I haven't seen except in fotos, complete with 3 and 4 jaw chucks, a quick change toolpost, both steadies, most of a taper turning attachment, and a dividing head on the headstock (?) Original motor replaced with a 3phase and VFD included. I feel I want a lathe with the capabilities of swinging a big faceplate, so I think I will pass on that one.
Our internet was down for about a week (joys of living in the sticks) and this morning when it came on again I see this Mazak offered only 300km away. The ad has been running a few days and the seller says I'm the only caller so far. He has single phase power and has been running it with a VFD and says he can't get full power to the motor and some contactors are faulty, which doesn't seem too much of a problem to sort out.
Getting the Deckel into where I want it proved more difficult than I thought it would be and I feel reluctant to do the same with a lathe ... but old iron disease being what it is ... The Hembrug weighs in at about 750kg and the seller reckons the Mazak to be about 900kg but it looks to be a lot heavier from the pix.
Any opinions about either of these machines? Oh and the guy with the Mazak is willing to cut me a deal on a Spartan 600 (?) shaper if I take both. I want a shaper with downfeed this one looks to be manual only downfeed.
Thanks,
Ant
