Schaublin 102N-VM trivia that probably no one cares about but...

I find it interesting that at some time perhaps in the early 90's they started having two hands spokes on the carriage hand wheel. I can see this for precise short moves but seems like it would be a PITA for moving the hand wheel more than 1/2 revolution. Any thoughts on why they did that ?
