Arlo lathes, what's their origin

$

Hi All,

we're in for a new conventional lathe of app. 25"x 80". one of the contenders is Arlo, which is an unknown brand to me.
I guess they come from China, but I'm not sure.
any expierence with those would be helpfull as wel.
we expect to run that lathe about 1200 hrs annually. A TOS or FAT would be better, but we aren't sure we can make that budget free.
looking forward to hear from you, guys.

HES / Cholet 500 1.6 weight and info?

Hi
I went and looked at this lathe to day and liked it. It's a little bigger than we were looking for but that's usually better than to small. This is the first one of these I have seen so I'd like opinions. I did a search but couldn't find much info on them. Here is what I saw:
There seemed to be two back gears and a direct belt drive coming from the main transmission. So it looked like 18 speeds with the six top speeds belt drive to the spindle. I liked that set up. The feeds seemed to work fine. I could not get the rapids to work. It looked like the rapids used the same feed rod but maybe a small motor at the tailstock end? How should the rapids work?
I would need to get use to the controls but overall I liked the layout
What would be the weight of this lathe?
What will it do as far as thread types?
Any general info about it would be great.
Thanks
Andy

Weiler 280 spindle thread?

Does anyone here quickly recall what spindle nose thread these lathes have? I do have one of these lathes, stored and slightly inaccessible, and I'd like to know. I assume it is something like a 45 by 3 metric thread but can't quite recall.

Thanks.

graziano SAG 508 compound dial

After having this machine for a few years I noticed my compound dial reads diameter and my cross slide reads radius. I have seen the odd machine that had dials read diameters but never mixed. Is mine typical for all Grazianos? I quickly discovered this while threading and telling myself " Damn that is a heavy cut!"

Is this a rare Schaublin??? South Africa

This machine was bought 20 yrs ago and totally rebuilt by my father. It has been a working machine since then and is a wonderful machine to use for delicate work. Has a a feeling like no other machine I have used.

It was bought with many original Schaublin accessories including full set of collets, chucks, face plate, ball turning attachment, tool rests, steady and large diameter internal ring collets.

It is a TR-120, but to our knowledge never had the turret, but came with a traditional tailstock. We are looking for anyone that might have some additional information on this machine as it seems to be a less common Schaublin model.

The machine has been fitted with a inverter drive for speed control.

Thank you

Hello all

My father bought this Hahn&Kolb about 30yrs ago and has been in a state of rebuild for many years now. We know very little about the lathe and google comes up with nothing. We would love to know the history and any other info that might be out there.

The machine has a full set of collets and many other small accessories not shown.

Thank you

Wasino Toolroom lathe -Whelp?

I recently went out to the home ofc. in Cali, and was walking thru the shop and noticed a bunch of these lathes. No model # but they had a plaque of alittle cartoon dog with the word WHELP next to it. Ha, very Japanese humor. They were small toolroom type lathes, very nice, compact but good swing. I found a couple of pics on the web, but wondering if they were good, great, etc. Don't have one to buy or sell, but just interested.

Weiler lathe getting too hot

Hi

I have a Weiler MDU lathe. Sorry the picture uploader wont create the binary file, so here is af picasa link:

https://plus.google.com/photos/10661...49003418734411

The spindle bearing has some green grease in it, and I have just burned the electric motor.... It turns very tight at first. When the grease is heated a little from the friction it gets better. However the spindle bearing casing gets 40-50C hot, so I suspect it is not the right lubrication.. Any know what kind of lubrication the bearings use? and maybe some assembly drawing of the spindle..

Thanks in advance.

Very Nice Schaublin very minimal backlash. Everything is extremely tight. 3 phase, works great.
Change Gears, spare worm gear, indexer, collet closer (no collets) tool post, 3 jaw chuck. Follow Rest as well.

If you are interested you can PM me an offer. Not sure I want to sell this lathe but if I get a good offer money talks.

mori seiki sl-2 yasnac control turret problem

I have a friend with a mori seiki sl-2 that when he got the machine it had parts stole off it like the x axis ref switch and hyd hoses. He has put new switch and hyd hoses. and the turret indexed once and now is unlocked and will not seat. I have checked the switches and the counters for the turret don't match. Need a procedure to fix this problem. I think the control is a yasnac 2000. Not sure how to check for sure.

Found my Graziano

I've been looking for a lathe for my shop for many years now. Looked at lots of lathes from many manufacturers and from complete basket cases to very nice examples but never found the right one or the right deal. Over this time I developed a better sense of what I really wanted in a lathe and developed an affection for Grazianos. Well long story short here she is..

Added a little more light...

Sorry for the crappy iPhone pictures. Next improvement is all new shift handles and grips. I guess plastic was a novelty back in the late 70's but they didn't hold up well over the years.
Not a big fan of the toolpost either so I'm in the hunt for a Multifix....

Machine day: They got their new ones, I got my new one

Some months ago I bought a VDF DUE 560 from a company who ordered 2 new Colchesters. Monday the new machines were delivered and I got my VDF.
Loading was easy due to huge forklift. Unloading gave me a sleepless night, but worked without hick-up, eventhough I had to do it with 2 forklifts. Unfortunately I forgot my camera. It would have been nice Youtube set to "Swan Lake".
VDF is heavier than both Colchester combined.
VDF is 4.6 to in weight, 4.5 meter long, 560mm turning diameter. Built in 1985, rebuilt by Boehringer in 2009.
I had to buy it because of the very, very attractive price.

New Colchesters arriving on truck:

A V550

No lifting provisions were found or identified in the manual.

And a V390

I cannot help myself, they look chinese to me:

I'd be afraid to touch the base casting with the forklift as I might break it.

The way they used grease, mismatching odd hardware, raw stock as parts and a general roughness, make me feel I got the more valuable machine. But according to Colchester distributor the machine are made in the UK. I guess the question is WHAT is made in the UK.

What I got:

Loaded:

Unloaded at my place:

Playtime continues tomorrow with cleaning. It is very dirty in the most impossible places.

Graziano SAG 17 question

$

Hello,
Today I looked at a Graziano SAG17 lathe for sale locally here in Arizona. The machine appeared to be in reasonably decent shape, though I am a newbie to metalworking machine tools (woodworking is normally my thing). The ways felt decent, though I had no measuring equipment to verify that. The tailstock slid very freely on its ways when unlocked and the carriage was able to be pushed about easily. It was under power and I verified that it would go into forward and reverse, and it seemed to shift into all its gears. Carriage and cross slide power feed worked. Under power the spindle rotated reasonably quietly and there was no visible wobbling or obvious damage the attached Chinese three jaw chuck (don’t know what brand the chuck was, only that it has Asian writing on it. I’m assuming Chinese)

Downsides seemed to be that there was some extension on the rear of the spindle which I could not figure out how to remove, and nor could the seller. The extension protruded about two inches from the door covering all the gears and prevented the door from opening for inspection. The coolant/chip pan had been removed from the machine, but was leaning against the wall behind it. It was pretty rusty. The coolant pump is obviously trashed as are the hoses (what’s left of them) and fittings for said pump. Overall, the machine was pretty dirty, and absolutely covered in oil.

The owner indicated that he had purchased the machine about a year ago and hadn’t used it. He claimed to have 25 years experience restoring and running lathes. When I asked what he had done to this one, he said that the machine was ‘dry’ when he got it and had ‘changed all the fluids’ and ‘lubricated everything’. The ways and such were literally dripping oil... While I was trying to peek in the 1/4 inch opening on the side door (before it bound on the rear spindle extension), the seller squirted quite a bit more oil on the gears with a hand pump can and declared that they were now ‘good’.

Other than the chuck, the machine comes with no tooling. No other chuck, no steady rest, no follow rest, no tool post, nothing. I would have to purchase or make these things, which for me factors into the machine's value.

My use for the machine would be home-shop oriented. Repairing and upgrading woodworking machinery, restoring an old tractor, building accessories for motorcycles, maybe some gunsmithing.

I like the fact that the machine is Italian (most of my woodworking equipment and motorcycles are), though I know that’s purely an emotional thing and of no real importance. I’m in no need of a lathe this instant, but I’ve been looking for about 6 months and haven’t found a lot available locally here. Evidently the real desert is also a machine-tool desert...

My real question, does the experience here support the asking price ($4150)? Is there anything else I should go back and look at? Should I hold out for something with more tooling? I’ve got this nasty habit of collecting tools, and I have to admit that despite the faults I’ve enumerated here, I think I’d like to take this one home with me.

Thanks for any advice!

Jon

No affiliation with the seller here…just came across this and thought one of you might save it, after the layers of bird shit are cleaned off! The Grazianos do seem to be kind of legendary to me specifically because of how the ways are set up. well here it is...Hercules sag14 lathe
